Well, it's now official: PS3 & Vita digital games and DLC will no longer be available for purchase. Fortunately, anything previously purchased will still be downloadable.

The PS3, PS Vita, and PlayStation Portable stores aren’t long for this world. According to a source familiar with the situation (verified by TheGamer), the stores are due to be closed down from July. The announcement is planned for the end of this month.

PSP’s and PS3’s stores are to be closed on July 2, while the PS Vita store will stay open until August 27. After those dates, you will no longer be able to purchase digital copies of games or DLC for any of the Sony consoles mentioned above.

The PS3 released in November 2006 and sold a total of 87 million units during its lifetime. The console officially ended production four years ago after 11 successful years on the market and three model redesigns. The PSP enjoyed similar success, selling around 81 million units since its release in March 2005.

Notoriously, the PS Vita was a bit of a flop. Sony’s second handheld released in December 2011 and sold between 10-15 million units across its lifetime, despite being an excellent little machine. The handheld recently saw some resurgence in popularity, thanks to how easy it is to turn into a portable emulator.

If you own any of the three consoles and you’ve always wanted to download a specific game, now is the time. No doubt the price of physical games will jump up once the stores cease to exist.

As far as the system looks like, trophies will also still be available. PS4 - maybe even PS5 still uses same meta data format as PS3 and PS3, with Vita both display trophies from PS4 titles for example.

This is actually very different from Xbox One/Windows 10 "Live" - now "Network" difference where Xbox 360 systems display just your overall gamer score from "Xbox One" in one "title". Somewhat erroneously since windows 10 and newer microsoft steam releases are part of these too.

It is funny that game publishers basically still make PS3 TITLE.PNG graphics for their games that used to be the menu elements for PS3 even for PS4 and PS5 games even though both new systems use different graphics for system menus and such.

Yeah PS3 trophies will still be available, including in the digital only games that are being removed IF you already own it. However, because the casual player won't be able to get and play these, the achievements in those games will technically be unobtainable.

This also includes all DLC for PS3 and Vita games - none of this will be obtainable anymore because it won't be purchasable. Even most "Game of the Year Editions" have digital downloads to get the DLC, which won't be possible anymore.

From VGC, they've worked out the approximate number of games that will no longer be obtainable:

https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/analysis-2000-digital-only-games-will-disappear-when-playstation-closes-its-stores/ says

In total, around 2,200 digital-only games will disappear after the stores close, including:

Around 630 digital-only Vita games
Around 730 digital-only PS3 (PSN) games
A small number of digital-only PSP games
293 PlayStation Minis
336 PS2 Classics
Around 260 PS1 Classics (particularly on PSP and Vita)

I've worked out there is roughly 297 Vita & PS3 games with DLC, which will no longer be obtainable. If you want to get these achievements, you may want to grab the DLC/games now!

EDIT: It's worth noting some games are available on PS Now, so will be a big task of deciphering what exactly will no longer be available. Work TBC!

Technically;
All of these games are obtainable, just not easily. These all are grey and against some people's morals and some company's TOS.

Physical Game discs (and updates for them) As far as this announcement says, still work. Physical game discs can still be bought from used market, though this will not help to make those cheaper.

Account borrowing: PS3 used to have 5 console, later down 2 console activation per PSN account. This is against TOS but hardly anyone's morals if you are OK borrowing games and such. You can ask friends who have PSN games purchased to have login on your console and download the titles you'd like to have on your console. Of course, Vita is SOL with this.

Account Borrowing, EXTRA SPICY EDITION: If the friend in question would like to expand upon this, or not have you permanently keep one of their PS3 system activations they can: Deactivate their own system(s) from the console, freeing up the two (not necessary just a possibility). Then you can have up to two friends login and download the games they want to keep on their HDD and add the activation to their console. After this; Crucially! These up to two users should now both keep those games as long as they can, disable automatic login but keep the local user of that borrowed account, AND NEVER LOGIN AGAIN. While account owner, will use Sony's website to universally reset their account's console activations (should be once per 6months again).
The downloaded games, as long as they are not PSNplus timed actications, will remain active on the console. Redownloading being out of question but it is a trick that... I have tested as fully working, as long as you use your main PSN account and PS3 user to play the games on this system...

The next level of iffy:
Modding. PS3 CFW compatible models are fairly easy to protect against most potential PSN bans if user is still careful and keeps the system mostly offline from PSN. There is basically one universally acclaimed tool that will block PSN access outright unless a sort of "temporary disable" is done to the CFW, letting you sync trophies. Yes, from all of your "obtained" games, whatever it may be... ... The negatives are, only certain hardware are compatible with a full on CFW, HEN systems for other PS3's are not really secure and you may or may not get banned - it has been a toss up and there is no real protections like with CFW even if you'd practice your best caution. While installation itself for CFW is not that challenging, doing everything correct before and after install to avoid bans and learning some of that stuff is daunting though. For someone who is not willing or able to learn some random things about life of a PS3 under the hood might as well leave this on table because accidental ban is probably far costlier to this community than the bonuses this approach might bring.

This is also, as far as I know thanks to vita's account system. For vita: Modding indeed is the only way. But also; every Vita and PSTV model are moddable not not even that hard. Daunting for anyone not comfortable and used to softmodding. Aside that initial hurdle which is far nicer than on PS3, there is some very easy ways to install additional homebrew and whatever else you want for the system, and as long as you are not outright cheating your trophies and such, PSVita detections for bans are not known to happen.

TL;DR:
Options remaining:
Used Disc/Cartridge games.
Borrowing 2nd activation for PS3 from a friend.
Borrowing and exploiting sony's PS3 local offline licensing system by resetting activations after borrowing. It all still is official as can be.

And: Modding and the P word.
PS3 is somewhat risky and not recommended to those willing and able to delve deep to learning a life of CFW console.
Vita is fairly easy and more or less safe as far as community around it has found out. Still; CFW is always against TOS and a ticket for ban by Sony regardless what a rag tag group of absolute TOS and even in sense moral violators say. My "worked for me" story is just my "Worked for me" story while there exists stories of the opposite.

You can burn me on steak for the suggestion. I am not justifying the P word as it is a moral dilemma that has wrong and right in both ways for sure.

Hey Sumea, been meaning to respond to you for ages. Really appreciate the well thought out and written response!

However, Sony have today confirmed that they won't be closing the PS3 and Vita stores! So good news all round!
