Consider the following example achievement:

"Complete 100 sidequests"

Would the tag be 'Collect' or 'Complete'? Discuss.

And then what about:

"Cast 5,000 spells"

Same question.

I'd hazard that both lean more towards 'Collect' than anything.

Perhaps there should simply be a tag of 'Repetition'?

In my opinion you have an object of some kind when you want to collect sth. . It doesn't matter if it is physical or just in theory in a game. But for me it is important that the object exists. I am not quite sure on how I should collect a cast?

I think when you want to cast a spell that it fits only to complete. Every cast takes a casting time in theory. It is only game logic, but even an instant cast fulfills the necessary procedure to cast it.

I see no problem here, but as I said, it is just my opinion. I also like the idea with the repetition category since it directly shows how boring an achievement could get,.. oh I am sorry. I of course mean how persistent the owners are ;) .

For me it counts exactly the same while doing a sidequest. Of course you can get some items for it, badges, better reputation for a faction and everything, but the quest itself disappears. The object is gone. Even when it is a daily or weekly quest à la World of Warcraft, the quest will reset and unlock itself.

I suppose it all depends on your perception. Whether you percieve a quest as something to complete, or a completed quest as something to acquire.

For instance whenever I complete a quest or do anything that counts towards a cumulative goal, I like to imagine the log of that action going into a physical stockpile or list, there to remain forever more.
I view such goals from the perspective of how many actions I have performed (or how many performed actions I have accumulated/collected) rather than how many actions remain to be done.

I admit that's probably quite a skewed and unusual perspective so I'd be willing to concede that the quests one should most likely be "complete" (particularly as it has the word in it's description).

However I'm not convinced on the argument for the spells. What about "Use"? To me, that tag describes and achievement wherein something must be done in a specific way, using a specific item or ability.

But then that raises the question:
"Kill 10 enemies with a shotgun" - Kill or Use? Though in that scenario I'd probably go with a 50/50 split.

You initial question was about complete or collect and not use or kill. When use exists, then casting a spell is definitely more use than complete. Since that was not a part of the post, I didn't include the possibility.

'Kill 10 enemies with a shotgun' fits the description for kill while 'Use a [specific weapon] to kill 10 [specific targets]' fits use.

In the end in the use and kill tags it doesn't really matter because both is fine. For everyone who thinks that the action is more important he will choose kill, for everyone who sets the focus on the way to kill enemies it will be use. In the end you may see a 50% - 50% tag below the achievement which leads to a more accurate display of the way to earn it.

It has nothing to do with kill or use, but as an example this one:

Type tells you collect 50% and explore 50%. Both is correct, but the focus of the persons who tagged it is different. Some just use a guide and rush through the collection while others prefer the way of exploration and discover it by their own.
