I guess there's probably a reason for this, but I noticed that all of the RetroAchievements are given very low points. For example: this achievement in Final Fantasy IX (for Steam) was achieved by 40% of players and is really, really easy (if you play through about a third of the game you can't not get it): http://metagamerscore.com/achievement/453659 It's worth 195 points. This achievement for Phantasy Star IV on RetroAchievement isn't that hard either, but does require you to play through about half the game, and was achieved by 30% of the players: http://metagamerscore.com/achievement/240475 It's worth 102 points, so just over half of the FF9 achievement, even though a smaller percentage of the players got it. This seems to be pretty consistent -- almost all of the RetroAchievements are worth around 100 points or less, but few Steam achievements are worth that little. The ones that are are basically "play the game once" type of things. For example, this "achievement" is for dying and 36% of the players (less than the Phantasy Star IV one) got it: http://metagamerscore.com/achievement/240475 But it's worth 298 points. And I literally played the game once for about half an hour, whereas I had to put in about 20 hours to get the Phantasy Star IV achievement. Is this because it's too easy to cheat at RetroAchievements or is there some other reason? I just got a RetroPi setup with a replica SNES bluetooth controller (pretty sweet) but it doesn't look like I'll be able to keep my ranking up with these 100 pt cheeves :D |

In general, Steam achievements are worth more because there is a statistical advantage of being more numerous. 30% for 10 users have a very low statistical certainty, while 30% for 1000 users have a higher statistical certainty. This is reflected in the score; The one with 1000 users will be allowed to have a higher score. So while there is no difference in how the scores are calculated, the bigger user-base results in a higher score even for the same earned %. One change that is coming online soon though, is that people with 0 achievements in a game will no longer be valued as much (i.e. counted mainly as non-players). This will result in less inflation of the Steam-achievements due to that, since many Steam-game-inventories are more bloated compared to other platforms. |

Ok, makes sense. Looks like it's more of a Steam thing than RetroAchievements, since I read this thread: http://metagamerscore.com/forum_topics/785 | |

Or, y'know, it could be because emulation isn't exactly agreed on within the legal community and, as such, the points would probably have to reflect that... |
